On Thursday, the 49ers announced they are waiving cornerback Tre Tomlinson, a player who has been plagued by injuries since joining the league. The move comes as no surprise, as the team added eight new rookies through the draft and several undrafted free agents in the days following the seven-round event.

Tomlinson's journey to this point has been anything but smooth. A standout at TCU, he earned All-Big 12 honors three times and was named an All-American once before the Los Angeles Rams selected him in the sixth round (No. 182 overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft. He showed promise as a rookie, appearing in 15 games and recording 13 tackles.

However, before his second season, a devastating season-ending injury sidelined him. The Rams released him in March of 2025, and the 49ers quickly claimed him, hoping to add depth to their secondary. But fate had other plans—Tomlinson landed on injured reserve in May, ending his third year before it even started. He missed the entire 2025 season without playing a single snap for San Francisco.

For the 49ers, this waiver move frees up a roster spot as they continue to evaluate their young talent and prepare for the upcoming season. It's a tough break for Tomlinson, but in the NFL, the show must go on, and the Niners are focused on building a competitive squad from the ground up.
