The San Francisco 49ers are heading into the 2026 season with a roster that screams experience—but that might be more of a warning sign than a badge of honor.
According to Fantasy Life's Ian Hartitz, the 49ers boast the second-oldest roster in the entire NFL, trailing only the Washington Commanders. What's even more striking is that San Francisco fields the oldest offense in the league. In fact, only three teams—the 49ers, New York Giants, and Cincinnati Bengals—have an offense where the average age exceeds 27. That's a significant red flag for a team that relies on speed and precision.
The numbers tell the story. The 49ers have 14 players who are 30 years or older on their roster, with eight of those veterans lining up on offense. That includes 40-year-old long snapper Jon Weeks, the oldest active player in the NFL, along with 37-year-old offensive tackle Trent Williams and 35-year-old fullback Kyle Juszczyk. While these players bring invaluable leadership and experience, the clock is ticking on their prime years.
But here's the twist: the defense tells a completely different tale. The 49ers' defense ranks as the 11th-youngest unit in the league, with an average age of just 25.91. Their 2025 first-round pick, edge rusher Mykell Williams, is only 21, while other defensive starters like safety Malik Mustapha, Alfred Collins, and Upton Stout are all under 25. That youthful energy on defense contrasts sharply with the offense's gray-haired core.
This age gap makes sense when you look at recent performance. The offense has been the team's engine for years, and that success often comes from veteran savvy. Even quarterback Brock Purdy, at just 26, brings the experience of nearly three full seasons under center—making him one of the more seasoned players on that side of the ball despite his relatively young age.
For the 49ers, the challenge is clear: can their experienced offense keep pace with a league that increasingly rewards youth and athleticism? Or will the defense's fresh legs carry the load while the offense leans on its wily veterans? Either way, this roster's age imbalance is a storyline to watch all season long.
