The 49ers haven't had a star safety in a while and may want to change that in the 2026 draft.

While much of the pre-draft buzz for the San Francisco 49ers has centered on edge rushers, wide receivers, and offensive linemen, a critical need in the secondary is flying under the radar. The team's pass defense struggled last season, ranking 25th in yards allowed and 21st in touchdowns allowed, highlighting a clear area for improvement.

According to NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the 49ers break from recent tradition and target a safety with one of their top two picks in the 2026 draft. "I just feel like the 49ers believe that there's more out there, that they can make more plays at safety," Maiocco said, emphasizing the team's desire for more game-changing turnovers from the position.

This would mark a significant shift in strategy for the front office. Historically, the 49ers have built their safety room through later-round selections. Current projected starter Malik Mustapha was a 2024 fourth-round pick, while other recent contributors like Ji'Ayir Brown (third round, 2023) and Marques Sigle (fifth round, 2025) were also Day 3 finds.

The statistical output from the group in 2025 underscores the potential need for an upgrade. The unit combined for just one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. With no player commanding a major salary, the 49ers have the flexibility to aggressively pursue a dynamic playmaker who can solidify the back end of their defense.

This strategic pivot could lead San Francisco to consider top prospects like Caleb Downs, signaling a renewed commitment to fortifying a secondary that aims to match the ferocity of its celebrated defensive front.
