The San Francisco 49ers may have wrapped up their NFL draft, but head coach Kyle Shanahan is already looking ahead—and their final trade could be a game-changer for the 2026 season.
After a whirlwind of moves across all three days of the draft, Shanahan revealed on the Rich Eisen Show that the team's last deal might have an unexpected payoff. The 49ers traded down four times, and in their final swap, they snagged a 2027 sixth-round pick from the Baltimore Ravens. This allowed them to keep their eight picks in 2026 while adding a valuable asset for the future.
"I think we added eight players who all have a very good chance of making our team," Shanahan said. "And on top of that, we added a sixth-round pick for next year—which I think is huge because we didn't have one. That's something we'll want next year, and it's also something you use a lot right before the trade deadline if we need to do that. Just having that gives us some ammo to improve our team this year if need be."
The 49ers have a history of being aggressive at the trade deadline, often using mid-to-late round picks to bring in impact players. Last season, they acquired defensive end Keion White from the New England Patriots for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 draft. If San Francisco is in Super Bowl contention come November, don't be surprised if they use that extra selection to make another bold move.
For a team that's always looking to stack the deck, this small draft-day maneuver could pay off in a big way when the season heats up.
