Liverpool legends Gary Gillespie and Sammy Lee have been reminiscing on the famous Double-winning 1985-86 season before an anniversary event marking 40 years since the triumph. It was the first season Kenny Dalglish had led the team as player-manager following the Heysel disaster and Joe Fagan's retirement.

Forty years on, the echoes of Liverpool's historic 1985-86 Double-winning season still resonate. As the club prepares for an anniversary event marking this unforgettable triumph, legends Gary Gillespie and Sammy Lee have been reflecting on a campaign that lifted more than just trophies—it lifted an entire club.

That season marked Kenny Dalglish's first as player-manager, stepping into the role after the devastating Heysel disaster and Joe Fagan's retirement. The football world was in shock, and uncertainty hung over Anfield like a heavy fog. Yet, from that darkness emerged one of English football's finest achievements: only the fifth Double in the nation's history.

"It was the lift the club needed after Heysel because everyone was on a down," Lee recalled. "Joe decided enough was enough. We weren't too sure what was going to happen and were all still in a state of shock. To have someone like Kenny come in and lead us and do what he did after that was nothing short of exceptional."

The determination in that dressing room was palpable. "Because of what happened previously we wanted to make it work," Lee continued. "We realised the club and English football was in such a sorry state so we needed to make it happen. That dressing room, alongside all the people Kenny had working with him, was going to make sure it was a success. Although we had a difficult start, it wasn't going to hinder our progress and it certainly didn't."

Gillespie offered insight into Dalglish's unique leadership style during that transitional period. "Kenny distanced himself a little bit from the players but still had a laugh and a joke. The dressing room was excellent with senior players and great characters throughout to look after everything going on."

That blend of serious focus and team camaraderie created the perfect environment for success—a formula that any sports fan, whether on the pitch or in the stands, can appreciate. As we look back 40 years later, the 1985-86 Double remains a testament to resilience, leadership, and the unbreakable spirit of a club that refused to be defined by tragedy.
