In a move that blurs the line between fiction and reality, one of television's most beloved soccer characters is trading the script for the real thing. Cristo Fernandez, best known for his infectious portrayal of Dani Rojas on Apple TV+'s award-winning "Ted Lasso," has signed a professional contract with USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive FC.
The 35-year-old Guadalajara native isn't just a TV star who kicks a ball around for the cameras. His soccer journey began long before he ever stepped onto a soundstage. Fernandez played the sport competitively in Mexico until a devastating injury forced him off the pitch at age 15, sending him down an unexpected path that eventually led to acting. Now, nearly two decades later, he's completing a remarkable full-circle moment.
Fernandez joins the Locomotive as a midfielder after impressing during a two-month trial with the club. His path to this contract included a stint training with Chicago Fire II, the MLS Next Pro affiliate of Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire. But it was his 30-minute cameo in a preseason match for El Paso that turned heads and turned into an extended opportunity to prove his worth.
This isn't just a publicity stunt. The USL Championship is a competitive league, and Fernandez will face off against Phoenix Rising FC, a fellow Western Conference powerhouse. For fans who remember Rojas' iconic "Football is life!" catchphrase, seeing Fernandez live out his own version of that dream is the kind of story that makes sports so compelling.
"Fútbol has always been a huge part of my life and identity, and no matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart," Fernandez told the Locomotive's official site. "This journey back to professional fútbol is about believing in yourself, taking risks, and continuing to chase your dreams no matter how unexpected the path may be."
With a knowing nod to his new team's nickname, he added: "Maybe I'm just a crazy man with crazy dreams… so being here with the 'Locos' actually makes perfect sense."
Locomotive head coach Junior Gonzalez clearly sees the potential, and for soccer fans and "Ted Lasso" devotees alike, this is one crossover episode we can't wait to watch unfold.
