When fiction meets reality, it sometimes creates the most compelling sports stories. Cristo Fernández, best known as the eternally optimistic Dani Rojas from the hit series Ted Lasso, has officially signed with the El Paso Locomotive FC after a two-month tryout that felt straight out of a Hollywood script.
The 35-year-old forward, who played an attacker for AFC Richmond on the show, will now make his professional soccer debut in the USL Championship. This moment is especially poignant given that Fernández hasn't played competitive soccer since suffering an injury at age 15 while in the Tecos FC academy system in Mexico.
"Cristo is a great addition to our roster, adding another attacking threat," said Locomotive head coach Junior Gonzalez. "His passion for the game and leadership qualities for our locker room allow us to continue growing the positive culture we strive for as a club."
For Fernández, a native of Guadalajara, this signing represents the culmination of a lifelong dream that never quite faded. "Fútbol has always been a huge part of my life and identity, and no matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart," he shared. "I'm incredibly grateful to El Paso Locomotive FC for opening the doors and giving me the opportunity to compete from day one."
The timing couldn't be better for El Paso, currently sitting fourth in the USL's Western Conference with a 4-2-3 record (14 points). The Locomotive's next match is May 27 at Southwest University Park against AV Alta FC, and fans will be eager to see if Fernández can bring a little of that Rojas magic to the pitch.
Whether you're a Ted Lasso fan, a soccer purist, or just love a good underdog story, this is one signing worth watching. After all, as Dani Rojas would say, "Football is life!"
