Basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson brought his signature spark to Stillman College's commencement ceremony on May 9, delivering a powerful message of perseverance and self-belief to the graduating class. The Hall of Fame point guard, who famously led the Los Angeles Lakers to five NBA championships before building a billion-dollar business empire, urged students to seize their moment.
"You have this big opportunity in front of you. It's what you do with it that's important, no excuses," Johnson told the crowd gathered on Sheppard Lawn in Tuscaloosa. "You can become anything you want to become as long as you prepare, and you believe in yourself. You can go as far as you want to go."
The ceremony celebrated 114 new graduates from the historically Black college, which is marking its 150th anniversary this year. In a fitting tribute to Johnson's legendary career and entrepreneurial success, Stillman awarded him an honorary doctor of business administration degree. The school also made him an honorary member of the basketball team, presenting him with a framed jersey.
Stillman College President Yolanda Page praised Johnson "for his commitment to education and Black generational excellence," noting that he "is a true representative of the type of merit Stillman has continued to instill in our communities for the last 150 years."
Johnson's advice went beyond basketball wisdom. He encouraged graduates to embrace hard work, resilience, and professionalism in every endeavor. "I'm driven by excellence. You got to be driven by excellence in doing your job right," he said, urging students to always over-deliver, regardless of their role.
For a man who turned his court vision into business acumen, Johnson's message was clear: preparation and self-belief can take you anywhere you want to go. As Stillman celebrates a century and a half of excellence, this year's graduates leave with more than a diploma—they carry the "magical" advice of a true champion.
