'Louder than premier league': Jamie Overton in awe of Chepauk crowd as CSK crush MI

Chennai Super Kings secured a dominant eight-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians, significantly denting MI's playoff aspirations. Ruturaj Gaikwad's unbeaten 67 and Kartik Sharma's 54* guided CSK to a comfortable chase after Anshul Kamboj's impressive bowling performance. Jamie Overton lauded the electric Chepauk crowd for their unwavering support.

The roar of the Chepauk crowd is something else entirely—Jamie Overton even says it's "louder than a Premier League game." And on Sunday night, that electric atmosphere fueled the Chennai Super Kings to a dominant eight-wicket victory over their arch-rivals, the Mumbai Indians, in the opening fixture of IPL 2026's 'Revenge Week.'

The win was a massive blow to MI's playoff hopes, leaving them on the brink of elimination. Meanwhile, CSK kept their own top-four dreams very much alive with a commanding performance at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium.

Mumbai got off to a promising start, with Naman Dhir smashing a top score of 57. But their middle order crumbled under pressure, and they could only manage 159/7. CSK's bowling attack was sharp and relentless, led by Anshul Kamboj's impressive 3/32, while Noor Ahmad and Overton himself kept the pressure on through the middle overs.

In response, CSK made the chase look comfortable. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was back in form with a classy, unbeaten 67, and Kartik Sharma provided the perfect support with a steady 54*. Their partnership guided the team home with ease, completing a league double over their fierce rivals.

After the match, Overton couldn't stop praising the fans. "Getting two points against a very strong Mumbai side gives us confidence going into the upcoming games," he said on JioHotstar. "Chepauk has one of the most passionate crowds I have played in. When I first came here last year, I said it was almost louder than a Premier League game. They are among the best crowds; they follow us everywhere. It is amazing to get all the support here, and I am loving my time in Chennai."

After a shaky start to the season, CSK are finally hitting their stride. With Gaikwad rediscovering his rhythm and the team firing on all cylinders, they look ready to push hard for that top-four finish. And with a crowd like that behind them, who would bet against them?
