There was a powerful sense of legacy on the diamond at Mid Valley High School this week. The school community gathered to honor a fallen teammate, Eddie Kaufman, with the inaugural "Live for Me" memorial baseball game. The event saw players donning the same Spartan green Eddie wore as a team captain, transforming the field he loved into a living tribute.
"We wanted to put our own spin on the great community events like the Bill Howerton Classic that raise awareness," explained Head Varsity Baseball Coach Ryan Kropa. "This game is for Eddie." A 2023 graduate and captain of both the baseball and golf teams, Eddie Kaufman passed away last October after a courageous year-long battle with leukemia.
His spirit was palpable. "Arguably, some of the best years of his life were here on this field," said Eddie's father, Brian Kaufman, reflecting on his son's profound impact as a student-athlete and leader. That impact now fuels a new tradition. Each year, one player will be chosen to wear Eddie's number and receive the Eddie Kaufman Award, ensuring his leadership qualities are celebrated in perpetuity.
"His legacy should live on forever. He was an extraordinary kid, athlete, and friend," said Mason O'Malley of Throop, moved by the sight of Eddie's jersey hanging in the outfield. To channel that legacy into action, Eddie's parents have established The Live For Me Foundation. Its mission is to uplift others with the same passion Eddie showed. "Our goal is to give back to people who want to do exceptional things—to live for themselves in the same spirited way Eddie did," Brian Kaufman stated.
More than just a game, the "Live for Me" event is a testament to how sports build bonds that last a lifetime, honoring a teammate whose influence continues to inspire from the outfield and beyond.
