WNBA fan favorite guard Kate Martin was waived by the Golden State Valkyries and signed a contract to join the Sparks' development pool.

In a whirlwind turn of events, fan-favorite guard Kate Martin has found a new home with the Los Angeles Sparks, signing a developmental player contract just hours before tipoff on Sunday. The former Golden State Valkyries standout arrived in Los Angeles with only 45 minutes to spare before the season opener, but she couldn't be more thrilled about the opportunity.

"It's been chaotic, but honestly, I've found a lot of clarity and confidence in where my career is heading," Martin said, her emotions raw but her excitement palpable. "I'm feeling really good right now."

Martin's release from the Valkyries during training camp came as a surprise to many, especially after she averaged 6.2 points per game in 42 contests last season. However, Golden State's depth at the wing position made her expendable as they addressed other roster needs. Now, she's turning that setback into a fresh start with the Sparks.

"I chose L.A. because of the way they approached me," she explained. "I feel honored for the opportunity. Opportunities don't always come around in this league, and for the year I got cut to be the year development spots exist, I feel very grateful."

The Sparks had one developmental slot remaining after signing Louisville graduate Laura Ziegler during training camp. Martin will be eligible for 12 games on the active roster, earning a weekly stipend of $750 plus a pro-rated minimum salary of $6,000. Among all players signed to developmental contracts across the league, she brings the most experience with two full WNBA seasons under her belt.

Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon, who coached Martin during her rookie season, had nothing but praise for the 25-year-old guard. "She's great in the locker room, a great teammate, and a super hard worker," Hammon said. "She came in with pro habits, which is rare straight out of college, and she was a nice piece for us."

Martin's popularity extends beyond the court—she had the third highest-selling jersey in the WNBA last season, despite coming off the bench for the Valkyries. Her journey from viral draft moment to fan favorite has been nothing short of remarkable, and now she's ready to bring that energy to Los Angeles.
