In a major win for Michigan Football, the Wolverines have landed a commitment from 2027 four-star defensive lineman Xavier Muhammad—and the future in the trenches just got a whole lot brighter.

The 6'5", 275-pound powerhouse out of Houston, Texas, announced his decision Thursday afternoon, choosing the Maize and Blue over heavyweights like Notre Dame and Miami. Ranked as the No. 8 defensive lineman in the Rivals300 and No. 102 overall nationally, Muhammad brings elite size, strength, and a relentless motor to a program that prides itself on dominant defensive fronts.

Originally set to announce his commitment on July 3, Muhammad moved up his timeline after an impressive spring visit to Ann Arbor. It all started in February when he received an offer from new defensive tackles coach Larry Black. That connection grew quickly, and by the time Muhammad took an unofficial visit in April, he was blown away.

"My expectations—it blew up because it was low-key way more than I expected," Muhammad told On3 after the visit. "In person, everything's bigger. The staff, I love the coaching staff, everybody there. Right when I got there, the love and connection was already there. The bond with me and coach Black just keeps getting stronger and stronger every time we see each other again."

Muhammad is now set to take his official visit to Michigan during Victor's Weekend (June 19), and it's expected he'll cancel other planned visits to Stanford, Houston, Miami, and TCU. He was also strongly considering Notre Dame, Arizona State, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky—but the Wolverines sealed the deal early.

With Muhammad on board, Michigan now boasts three four-star defensive line commits in the 2027 class, joining edge rushers Recarder Kitchen and Jayce Brewer, who pledged just last weekend. That brings the Wolverines' total to nine commitments in the cycle—and the defensive line is shaping up to be a force to be reckoned with.

Muhammad also ranks No. 12 in the talent-rich state of Texas and No. 10 nationally among defensive linemen. His junior year highlights show a player with explosive first-step quickness, violent hands, and the versatility to disrupt from multiple spots along the line—exactly the kind of cornerstone piece Michigan fans love to see in the trenches.

For Wolverine Nation, this is more than just a commitment—it's a statement. The future is blue, and it's built from the line of scrimmage out.
