Calm morning conditions at Harbour Town Golf Links set the stage for a scoring spree in Round 2 of the 2026 RBC Heritage, and no one capitalized better than Matt Fitzpatrick. The 2023 champion fired a brilliant 8-under 63, seizing the tournament lead at 14 under and reminding everyone why he looks so comfortable on this iconic Pete Dye layout.
Fitzpatrick's success is built on a foundation of elite ball-striking and a red-hot putter—a classic recipe for victory at Harbour Town. He currently ranks fourth in Strokes Gained: Approach and third in Strokes Gained: Putting, a dominant combination. He credited recent work with his putting coach and the restored greens, which he says have more defined slope, allowing him to pick a line and commit with confidence.
Sometimes, however, you need a little luck to go with great play. Fitzpatrick got a massive break on the par-3 14th, where a hooked tee shot hit a tree, ricocheted back across the green, and fortuitously stopped short of the water after rolling through a sprinkler head. He coolly converted the ensuing birdie putt from off the green, a moment that could define the tournament. "You need those breaks in golf," Fitzpatrick acknowledged. "Nice to get the break and then nice to take advantage of it."
Despite his commanding performance, Fitzpatrick can't afford to glance in the rearview mirror. Lurking just three shots back is the ever-dangerous Viktor Hovland, whose own stellar ball-striking makes him a prime candidate to mount a weekend charge. The stage is set for a thrilling duel between precision and power as the wind picks up and the course firms up, testing every club in their bags—and the nerve of every contender.
