The 2. Bundesliga relegation battle is a rollercoaster, and Greuther Fürth are on another stomach-churning dip. Just as they had clawed their way out of the bottom three with a promising four-game unbeaten streak, a winless run of three matches has plunged them back into the danger zone. Sitting 17th on 30 points, the pressure is mounting again as they prepare to host SV Darmstadt 98.

Their latest performance did little to calm the nerves. A tepid 0-0 draw against bottom club Preußen Münster highlighted their attacking struggles. Striker Noel Futkeu was left stranded, with the team mustering a paltry 0.19 expected goals and failing to create a single clear-cut chance. Manager Heiko Vogel pinpointed the tactical challenge, noting, "We became a bit too passive against deep-lying defenses." He is banking on a more open game against Darmstadt to reignite his side's spark.

For Darmstadt, the stakes are just as high but at the opposite end of the table. Their promotion charge has hit a sudden speed bump. After a stellar start to 2026, losing just once in ten matches, back-to-back defeats have seen them slip to fifth, now five points off the coveted promotion play-off spot. A toothless 2-0 home loss to Hannover 96, exacerbated by the absence of top scorer Isac Lidberg, exposed their recent lack of cutting edge.

Manager Florian Kohfeldt, however, is refusing to sound the alarm. "I don't see any lack of belief," he asserted, backing his squad to rediscover the form that made them contenders. The reverse fixture offers encouragement—a thrilling 4-2 Darmstadt win in November, fueled by a Fraser Hornby brace. But their current eight-game winless streak on the road casts a shadow, setting the stage for a tense and pivotal clash where both teams are desperate to reverse their fortunes.
