Travel with us back to 1976, a pivotal year in Horseheads sports history. That spring, the Blue Raiders softball program took the field for its very first season, led by a then-unknown coach who would go on to become a legend: Warren Conklin.

Conklin, now a Hall of Fame inductee, launched a remarkable 34-year career that season, a journey that would ultimately end with his retirement in 2010. Under his steady guidance, Horseheads became a powerhouse, capturing three New York State Championships in 1991, 1993, and 1996. His 570 career wins remain a staggering achievement—currently fourth all-time in New York State history, and a state record at the time of his retirement.

Beyond the numbers, Conklin’s impact is measured in the countless athletes he mentored. A member of both the New York State Softball Hall of Fame and the Chemung County Sports Hall of Fame, he prepared players for success at every level of college softball, from NCAA Division I to Division II and Division III. Many of his former players have gone on to become coaches themselves, carrying forward his legacy.

This photo, taken 50 years ago, captures the very beginning of that incredible story. It’s a reminder that every championship run starts with a single season, a single coach, and a team daring to dream big.
