Fifa hits back at criticism from New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, saying vastly inflated train fares at the 2026 World Cup will have a "chilling effect".

As excitement builds for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a major off-field controversy is threatening to sideline fan accessibility. FIFA has issued a sharp rebuttal to criticism from New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, arguing that exorbitant train fares to key stadiums will create a "chilling effect" on the tournament experience far beyond the sticker shock.

The dispute centers on transportation to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, which will host eight matches—including an England group game and the final on July 19. Fans face a staggering $150 (£111) charge for a simple 30-minute train ride from New York, with no discounted rates for children or seniors. Shuttle bus alternatives are priced at $80 (£59).

Governor Sherrill placed the blame squarely on FIFA, stating her administration "inherited an agreement where FIFA is providing $0 for transportation" while local transit authorities face a $48 million bill. She argued that with FIFA projected to make billions, the organization should subsidize fan travel.

FIFA's Chief Operating Officer for the 2026 World Cup, Heimo Schirgi, fired back, emphasizing their goal to reduce congestion and ensure a positive fan experience defined by "the action on pitch, not delays on the roads." He warned that these "elevated fares inevitably push fans towards alternative transportation options," increasing traffic, causing late arrivals, and ultimately diminishing the economic benefits for the host region.

This pricing issue isn't isolated to New York/New Jersey. Similar inflated costs are reported for travel to Gillette Stadium near Boston, where train fares have jumped to $80 (£59). For fans already investing in travel, tickets, and team apparel, these additional burdens could dampen the celebratory atmosphere FIFA aims to create, turning a global festival of football into a logistical and financial headache for the very supporters who give the tournament its life.
