The Dallas Wings' promising start to the season is quickly unraveling, and head coach Jose Fernandez isn't holding back. After a second straight loss—this time a 90-86 defeat to the Minnesota Lynx on Thursday—Fernandez called out "selfishness in this locker room" during a fiery postgame press conference.
The Wings opened the season with an electric win over the Indiana Fever, but that momentum has vanished. Back-to-back nail-biters against the Atlanta Dream and Lynx have exposed deeper issues, and Fernandez is making it clear that individual agendas are getting in the way of team success.
"Championship teams, they don't care who starts, they don't care how many minutes they play," Fernandez said, his frustration evident throughout a 10-minute press session. He stressed that players need to contribute beyond scoring—defending, rebounding, and moving the ball—even when shots aren't falling.
The Wings underwent a major overhaul after a disastrous 2025 season. Fernandez replaced Chris Koclanes, and the front office made splashy moves: re-signing All-Star guard Arike Ogunbowale, adding 2025 co-Defensive Player of the Year Alanna Smith, along with Jessica Shepard and Odyssey Sims, and drafting Azzi Fudd with the No. 1 overall pick.
But the new-look roster hasn't clicked defensively. Dallas currently owns the fourth-worst defensive rating in the league (110.2), and questions are mounting about Fernandez's rotations—particularly his decision to bring Fudd off the bench. The coach's comments suggest the issues run deeper than X's and O's.
"Body language never whispers," Fernandez warned, emphasizing that truly great teams play for each other. "When that changes, then you don't lose these types of games."
For a team with championship aspirations, the message is clear: it's time to check egos at the door and play Wings basketball.
